Workington shines bright this winter with a magical light festival for all the family
This winter, Workington is set to dazzle residents and visitors alike with Hall Park Light Works – a spectacular new Cumberland Council Light District event bringing seasonal sparkle to West Cumbria.
Taking place on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December, this enchanting event for all ages will transform the heart of Workington into a glittering wonderland after dark.
Hall Park Light Works will be a family friendly journey through a magical winter wonderland that will transform Workington Hall grounds with lights, projections, music, fire and winter warming food and hot drinks.
The event is free to attend and part of Cumberland Council’s Light District. It is presented in partnership with the West Coast Creative People & Places programme, Everyone Here. Everybody is welcome to join the fun.
Supported by the UK Government and Arts Council England, the event is free to attend – no ticket is required, just turn up. It will run each night from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, the event will be fully accessible.

“Following our successful Light District events in Carlisle and St Bees, we are now delighted to extend the programme to Workington. This is a free event for all the family to enjoy. No matter what age you are, you’ll have a great time. So join us and experience the magic of winter in Workington in a whole new light.”
Co-Director Sam Hunt, Everyone Here, said: “Hall Park Light Works is the product of a series of incredible collaborations. From the artists Hannah and Ronan, who despite having very different practices are together creating a magical experience that will feel totally unique to Workington. To Cumberland Council working in partnership with Everyone Here to make it all happen. But most importantly the communities who are helping shape the work and the members of Everyone Here’s Jury for Joy (the citizens of West Cumbria at the heart of all work undertaken by us at EH) who helped devise the project at the very beginning. We can’t wait to welcome you to this familiar place transformed into somewhere extraordinary.”
The two lead artists tasked with bringing the event to life are Ronan Devlin and Hannah Fox. Both have years of experience working with light and local communities.
“I love working across my home region, from streets to hilltops, beaches to towns, so an opportunity to create and present in Workington at this fantastic event was not to be missed. This festival is slap bang in the town and is really accessible and central to the Workington winter celebrations and I am excited to be a part of such an important occasion in the Workington calendar. ” said Hannah Fox.
“I love making work that’s both about and has an effect on a place. This is a great project as there is such a rich cultural history to draw from in Workington and the Hall setting is a stunning canvas to tell stories on. Expect Workington Hall cloaked in light, colour and sound, riding a mystic unicorn!” said Ronan Devlin.
This new Light District event is part of a wider winter programme of activities taking place in and around Workington throughout November 2024. These are organised by a variety of organisations.
