Celebrating 1900 years of Hadrian’s Wall
If you are fascinated by Roman History, then 2022 will be a year to remember.
Beginning on January 24th, Hadrian’s birthday, there will be a year-long celebration, celebrating 1900 years since the commencement of Hadrian’s Wall.
There will be hundreds of events and activities taking place in a year-long festival across Hadrian’s Wall, from Tyneside in the East, across the centre , through Carlisle and down the Solway coast.
There will be a series of events from a variety of organisations and community groups, local societies, interest groups, community organisations, arts organisations, local creatives, local authorities, visitor attractions, venues, and individuals.
Jane Laskey, Manager of Senhouse Roman Museum, is excited, Jane said ” It’s really exciting and something we are looking forward to. All of our events will be themed around the celebrations to mark the 1900 milestone. We have a packed programme ahead of us and we are all looking forward to next year and what it brings.”
Now you may be wondering how Senhouse Roman Museum fits in with the Hadrian’s Wall celebrations, as Jane explains
“We are part of the World Heritage Site, the Solway Frontier is all part of that. The Roman castrum or fort ‘Alauna’ was part of the Hadrianic Frontier.
From Bowness on Solway where the physical wall ends to Maryport, there are a whole series of smaller forts Mile Forts and watchtowers which all played a part in the Hadrianic Frontier”
If you aren’t familiar with Roman history and their time here on the West coast, you will be surprised to learn that they were quite prevalent throughout the whole region.
Further down the coast from Maryport, there are Burrow Walls in Workington, this was a 4th Century fort.
If you carry on down the coast you will find Moresby Fort, the outline is still clearly visible today and if you carry on further south, you will eventually hit Ravenglass, a Roman Port, they were everywhere it seems.
