Preparations underway for Carlisle open-air market

Preparations are underway for a culinary event that will take place in Carlisle later this week and over the bank holiday weekend.

The popular international market is set to return to Carlisle city centre between Thursday 24 and Monday 28 August.

Organised by Market Place Europe, the award-winning international market is supported by Cumberland Council, shoppers will be spoilt for choice with a huge mix of authentic continental treats in the city centre.

Stalls will be open between:

  • Thursday 24 August: 9am – 6pm.
  • Friday 25 August: 9am – 6pm.
  • Saturday 26 August: 9am – 6pm.
  • Sunday 27 August: 10am – 5pm.
  • Bank Holiday Monday, 28 August: 10am – 5pm.

The event will include a great selection of arts, crafts, unique gifts and local traders.

For food lovers, there will be a tempting selection of continental and international flavours to sample, including Spanish Paella, Greek Gyros, a new Greek Vegan Deli serving a lot of tasty treats, Chinese, Indian, Polish, German, and other exotic street foods. There will also be a great selection of fresh foods including olives, British cheeses and chutneys, cakes, salami and pick and mix sweets.

The Box Bar will also be on site serving cold beers and other beverages.

Green fingered shoppers will not be disappointed either as the market will include popular Dutch plant seller with his wonderful array of shrubs, plants, trees and bulbs.

Andy Pidgen Market Place Europe’s Operations Manager said:

“Carlisle is a special place for Market Place Europe and the warm welcome we receive from local people and visitors alike is always amazing, it’s always great that so many local Carlisle and Cumbrian traders join us alongside our fantastic international traders, there is always something for everyone to enjoy at this fantastic market in the wonderful city of Carlisle.”

An ancient Proclamation will be recited at the Market Cross on Saturday, 26 August at 10am. The Proclamation is a declaration of Carlisle’s rights to hold an annual Fair in August, originally granted to the citizens of the city in 1352 by Edward III.

A procession including The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Abdul Harid, the Chair of Cumberland Council, Cllr Carni McCarron-Holmes, Sword and Mace Bearers and other Civic dignitaries will make its way from the Old Town Hall to the Market Cross in the city centre.
