The Light District – visual and audible feast in the heart of Carlisle

For the last three years, Carlisle City of Lights events have lit up the city in ways that can only be described as mesmerising, moving, and magical. And guess what? The event is heading back for its fourth year, only this time under the new moniker, The Light District, rebranded as a series of events will now travel across the region due to its popularity.

Taking place between Thursday, 15 February and Saturday, 17 February, Carlisle will host this spectacular sound and light show, bringing the splendour of the Crown Jewels – 300 miles from their home at the Tower of London – to be illuminated and projected in a spectral dance across some of the most iconic buildings in the city, including Carlisle Cathedral and Carlisle Castle.

Brought to Carlisle with the support of Cumberland Council, ‘Crown and Coronation’, produced by Historic Royal Palaces and Luxmuralis, is an event you won’t want to miss. The show will feature stunning imagery spanning across the centuries.

Visitors will journey through more than 1,000 years of history, encompassing the reigns of some of the most famous English monarchs, including William the Conqueror, Elizabeth I, and Queen Victoria.

Kings, Queens, Crowns, and Jewels will all be illuminated on our historic buildings, accompanied by a soundscape of perfection.

The visual and audible feast will set your senses alight and leave you moved, awed, and inspired.

Cumberland Council and Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said:

“We can’t wait to welcome Peter and all from Luxmuralis to Carlisle once again. It has been a real pleasure working with the team over the last four years, as the events have always been a massive hit for the city overall.

So many of our local businesses benefit from these events, and at this time of year, it is a much-needed economic boost to our businesses here in Carlisle. This particular show, which was recently held at The Tower of London, looks set to be one of our biggest so far.”

Running across three nights, the immersive sound and light installation will take place inside Carlisle Cathedral, outside of The Fratry (in the Cathedral grounds), Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, and within the grounds of Carlisle Castle, projected on majestic buildings, some of which have stood for nearly 1,000 years.

Visitors will also have the chance to marvel at detailed footage of the Crown Jewels, the objects at the very heart of the coronation ceremony, projected onto Carlisle’s historic buildings.

There will be time slots between 6.30pm and 9pm each day.

Tickets are £8.50 per adult, £7.50 per child (aged 5 -16), and free for under 5s.

Tickets are available from www.skiddle.com
or directly from the Carlisle Tourist Information Centre (01228 598596).
