Community Shed Project set for Full Opening in January

A new community shed project is set to open its doors to the public in January. Based on Muncaster Estate, the project will be open for a range of activities designed to build social connectedness for older people and those marginalised by poor health and disability. Project coordinator Tom Dalziel comments;

“From mid-January, we will run twice weekly sessions where members can come to Muncaster and get involved. Members will join in an informal community that promotes inclusiveness and active living. In the mix will be restoration, carpentry, gardening and arts and crafts as well as frequent cups of tea and volunteering opportunities around Muncaster Estate.”

“We have been working to redevelop a semi-derelict shed on the estate for nearly a year. We have since replaced the roof and most of the interior to a high standard. This was initially made possible through funding from the Holroyd Foundation and Copeland Community Fund, but work has been enhanced by contributions of time, money and skills from workers within the local nuclear and business sectors. These contributions have gone above and beyond all expectations and we have been delighted to see the community and businesses pulling together to make it all happen.”

Via the OneAim Volunteering platform the project has had significant contributions from Altrad Babcock, who have renovated the workshop space to a high standard. The shed embodies the remit of Age UK West Cumbria, the organisation who have pushed the project forward alongside Muncaster Estate. Jane Mindar CEO of Age UK West Cumbria comments; 

“The best way to remain healthy in later life is to make a point of being active, engaged and socially connected. This shed delivers on those principles. Situated in Mid Copeland, we believe that the unique location of Muncaster Estate offers a transformational experience for users, and with the support of Muncaster Microbus, users from across western Cumbria will be able to access the shed.”

The shed is set to launch on Mondays and Wednesdays 10am-3pm from Monday 16th January. Membership registration is required and spaces are limited. Assistance with transport can be provided by Muncaster Microbus.
