With the support of Carlisle City Council’s Discover Carlisle team, GLL and Tullie House, The Sands Centre is hosting the Uncovering Roman Carlisle project touring exhibition until the beginning of February, to reach new audiences and celebrate the achievements of Uncovering Roman Carlisle.

In 2021 and 2022 Carlisle volunteers and archaeologists from Wardell Armstrong excavated Carlisle Cricket Club to explore what we know now to be the largest Roman bathhouse on Hadrian’s Wall. Over 1100 days given by volunteers, the excavations have discovered more than 700 finds, including 500 coins, and over 30 Intaglios – the carved gemstones from Roman signet rings.

Claire Sleightholm, Tullie House and Uncovering Roman Carlisle’s exhibition curator said:

“It’s very exciting to be able to take the Uncovering Roman Carlisle exhibition to a new audience at The Sands Centre and bring Carlisle’s unique community excavation story and artefacts to be seen in the community for free. The exhibition has been well received and enjoyed by visitors in venues around the city during the summer of 2022, such as Longtown Community Centre, Brampton Moot Hall and even in The Lanes Shopping Centre, and now The Sands.”

This project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and is supported by volunteers led by a partnership of Carlisle City Council, Carlisle Cricket Club, Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery and Wardell Armstrong.
