Charity Quiz Night at ‘Cakes and Ale Cafe’

Carlisle’s brainboxes are urged to get their thinking caps on for this month’s Charity Quiz Night at ‘Cakes and Ale Cafe’.

Taking place from 7pm on November 29th the event will raise vital funds for medical aid in some of the world’s most besieged territories. The quiz night is the latest in a series of events hosted by local campaigners, Palestine Solidarity Group Carlisle & District.

Heartened by strong support for their informative film nights the group are embarking on a more light-hearted event. The quiz will support Medical Aid for Palestinians’ (MAP’s) valuable programmes in Gaza and Lebanon. The Carlisle group’s chair, Fiona Goldie, has visited the Palestinian Territories previously and the group sent an aid package to a young blind boy in the West Bank earlier this year.

“We are really pleased to be working with Cakes and Ale Cafe to host this event” Fiona said, “Fortuitously, November 29th is International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, so it is a great day for us to be raising funds for medical assistance there.”

From breast cancer care to eye clinics and prostheses, MAP has been reaching out to Palestinian communities for over 30 years, providing immediate medical aid to those in need at times of crisis. Health care in Gaza – already precarious in the wake of an 11-year blockade – has been further impacted by the high rate of casualties from military fire on protesters since March 2018.

The charity also develop local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system.  Proceeds from the quiz will help support their important work delivering health and medical care to those worst affected by conflict, occupation and displacement.

Entry to the quiz is £2 per person for teams of 4 people. All proceeds will go to Medical Aid for Palestinians and there will also be a raffle with some interesting prizes up for grabs. Booking is essential- please call 01228 529067 to reserve table.

I enjoyed attending this event as the solo representative of Meet up-” Carlisle- Make New Friends”, I then had to join another team to make up a team of five, my fellow team member were all members of a local choir, some had medical, geographic and general knowledge from their careers / pastimes, which proved very helpful with the challenging questions of this well organised quiz event.

I chipped in with a few correct answers when needed, we as a team were called the “Corner Team”, we surprised ourselves by coming 1 st after round one -of 20 questions, then dropped back a little in the second round up, and by the last round we made third overall, and 2 of our team members won some raffle prizes too.

Special thanks go out to the very accommodating staff of the Book Ends Cafe’ and Book shop, their Healthy cakes and beverages are really delicious, and the surroundings cosy, comfortable and friendly, which all made for a lovely evening 🙂

The Palestine Solidarity Group, Carlisle & District, gave a varied and knowledgeable presentation of the groups fundraising efforts to provide primary health care provision to the citizens of the Occupied Palestine Territories, The emphasis to being to lessen the hardship felt across the region, particularly the women, children with anti natal services and help the infirm and injured in past and present conflicts in the region…Definitely in my view a really worthwhile cause to donate charity funds to 🙂

Special thanks go to two members of the “Corner Team”, who very kindly offered me and my food bank provisions a safe journey back to Longtown, as the quiz ran over on time by nearly an hour, my last bus being at 10 pm, fortunately they lived in Langholm, I thank you graciously for your generosity 🙂
