New Mayor of Workington to be Announced

The new Mayor of Workington will be announced on Friday 24 May, 7pm, at the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre.

The ceremony is open for all to attend and lasts approximately 40 minutes. It’s an opportunity to formally announce the new Mayor of Workington who was selected at the council’s annual meeting. The Mayor of Workington acts as Chairman for the council and, as well as chairing the council’s meetings, has a Civic role as the first citizen of Workington and represents the town at civic functions and public events.

During the ceremony, the new Mayor of Workington will select a charity to support during their year in office. The outgoing Mayor of Workington, Cllr Barbara Cannon, selected Hospice at Home West Cumbria as her chosen charity. Cllr Cannon will announce the total raised for her charity during the ceremony.

Cllr Cannon will also announce her ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and the recipients of the new ‘Sports Award’. Last year the volunteer award was presented to Evelyn Adams. The Sports Award is a new award and will be presented to a club or individual that has made an outstanding contribution to sports in Workington.

 

After the ceremony has finished, guests will be invited to meet the new Mayor and members of the Town Council in the cafe and bar area of the theatre. A buffet and refreshments will be provided.
