Institute of Arts hosts Masters showcase
A showcase exhibition featuring the work of graduates of the University of Cumbria’s MA Contemporary Fine Art and Creative Practice programmes opens today.
The university’s Institute of Arts is delighted to open its doors to the public for POSTREMO.
The title, Latin meaning ‘finally’, is in part a reference to the recent Covid pandemic and lifting of Government restrictions, making a live public event now possible.
Like so many, the students involved in POSTREMO have all had to adjust to different learning experiences, whether online or working within shared creative spaces.
Moreover, the exhibition comes at the end of a period of intense study which leads to the completion of their final MA Project.
For many this will mark the closing of an important chapter as a student at the University of Cumbria before graduation and embarking on their professional careers.
The exhibition comprises of artist installations, sculpture, printmaking, photography, documentary and mockumentary film, animation, computer-game narratives, web-site design, comic-strips, and a fantasy novella.
Theoretical perspectives that have informed some of the work include mediations on corporate capitalism, internet memes, the concept of time, eco science-fiction, the immigrant experience, photographic surrealism, and walking the Lakeland landscape.
Artists exhibiting work include:
MA Contemporary Fine Art – Gabriel Baker Bennett, Katy Cox, Poppy Cookson, Abigail Dixon, Mia Eccleston, Natalia Sebastian, and Heather Robinson.
MA Creative Practice – James Bates, Natalie Boyne, Hayley Brown, Rebecca Butler, Madeleine Carr, Archie Grant, Holly Jones, Andrea Kershaw, Michelle Lam, David Lee, Martin Pullan and Danielle Sutcliffe.
Lecturer Nick Dodds, programme leader for MA Creative Practice, said: “The diversity of work, and of creative approaches and theoretical perspectives, makes for a vibrant and heady mix. An exhibition at the Brampton Road campus is an opportunity to celebrate the vitality of the collected visions on show, to meet the artists in person and engage with the artworks in the environment in which they were intended to be viewed and experienced.”
POSTREMO is open from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 9 September in the Fine Art Studios and Vallum Gallery located on the Brampton Road campus in Stanwix, Carlisle (pictured below).
A private viewing event for invited guests, family and friends is taking place on the evening of Thursday 1 September.
POSTREMO is open for public viewing on weekdays 10am-4pm (closed Sundays).
