The Roman Army Museum has had a huge revamp, with a gorgeous new cafe, a new activity centre, new exhibits, and many exciting events taking place throughout the year. It’s the perfect time to go and explore Cumbria’s rich Roman history.

The new activity centre will also play host to the diggers who are excavating Roman Magna. Exciting times indeed.
Located in Greenhead, near Brampton, the Roman Army Museum makes for a fantastic day out. Be transported back in time to 1900 years ago. Learn about the lives of the Roman soldiers who lived and worked on the most northern edges of the Roman empire at the Vindolanda and Magna forts.
You get a glimpse into the lives they lived through the artefacts that have been unearthed around the forts, from the cooking utensils they used to items of jewellery, clothing, and even preserved shoes they wore!

This April, archaeologists revisit the Magna Fort to resume the dig for the second year in the five-year-long excavation. They have already uncovered a human skeleton; what could be found on the day of your visit?
This year they have a huge event calendar, starting with their event with Marcus the Medicus on May 25th and 29th. Their very own Marcus will lead you on an exploration of what it would have been like to be a medicus during the Roman Empire at this family-friendly event. Stamp your own votive offerings and hope that the gods will reward you with good health, get up close with Roman surgical equipment, and, with a Saver Ticket, continue your Medicus adventure on-site at Roman Vindolanda.

Another exciting event is their Taste of the Empire event on June 22nd and 23rd. Visitors get the opportunity to taste and see what and how Roman soldiers and their families ate. There will be a historic cooking demonstration from chef John Crouch. You will be immersed in ancient Roman life, and you may even pick up a few recipes to try at home!
Following their June event, they have their family Roman Army School days. Children and parents will have the opportunity to learn some of the skills necessary to join the Roman Army. Gear up with your unit and learn to march like a Roman soldier, tackle their obstacle course, and test your archery skills with some target practice. Once they have completed all the activities, the children will receive a small prize. It’s a great day out for the whole family. The dates for this event are July 23rd and 30th and August 6th and 13th.
The Roman Army Museum is the perfect place to start your Hadrian’s Wall adventure. With a variety of interactive exhibits and workshops to get involved in, it makes for a great day out for the whole family!
