A remarkable piece of maritime history is set to arrive on the Cumbrian coast this summer as the Nao Santa María prepares to dock in Whitehaven Harbour.
The impressive vessel, a full-scale replica of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, will open to visitors from July 30th, offering a rare opportunity to step aboard one of history’s most famous ships and experience life at sea during the Age of Exploration.
Built in 2018 to commemorate the 525th anniversary of Columbus’ historic voyage across the Atlantic, the Nao Santa María has become one of the world’s most fascinating travelling maritime museums.
Constructed in Punta Umbría, Spain, the replica took just 14 months to build and combines traditional shipbuilding techniques with modern engineering to ensure both authenticity and safety. Crafted using iroko wood over a fibreglass structure, the ship closely recreates the appearance and atmosphere of the original vessel while meeting modern maritime standards.
Towering above the harbour, the ship features four masts carrying more than 300 square metres of sail, supported by over three kilometres of rigging, creating a spectacular sight for visitors and photography enthusiasts alike.
While fitted with contemporary navigation equipment, the vessel has been designed to sail much as its 15th-century predecessor would have done, providing a genuine insight into the challenges faced by sailors more than 500 years ago.
The original Santa María was the flagship of Christopher Columbus’ expedition to the Americas in 1492, a voyage that would go on to become one of the most significant moments in world history. Although the ship was lost later that same year, its legacy continues to capture the imagination of people around the globe.
Since launching, the replica Nao Santa María has toured ports across Europe and the United States, attracting thousands of visitors eager to learn about maritime history and explore the conditions endured by sailors during long ocean voyages.
During its stay in Whitehaven, visitors will be able to climb aboard and take a guided tour of the vessel, discovering the ship’s fascinating story and gaining an understanding of life on board during one of history’s most famous expeditions.
Vela Cuadra Producciones, operators of the vessel, have announced that guided tours for schools, associations and the general public will be available at Whitehaven Harbour on July 30th and 31st, and August 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th, between 10am and 8pm.
Admission is priced at £6 for children under 11 years old and £12 for visitors aged 11 and over.
School groups are also welcome, with one adult admitted free for every ten students.
During the visit, guests will learn about the replica itself and the famous voyage undertaken by Christopher Columbus, exploring the story of the ship that played a central role in what has often been described as the encounter between two worlds.
Excitement is already building ahead of the vessel’s arrival, particularly following the successful visit of El Galeón Andalucía to Whitehaven last year, which attracted large crowds to the harbour.
Organisers are hopeful that the Nao Santa María will prove just as popular, offering residents and visitors another unique opportunity to experience living maritime history on their doorstep.
