The Muncaster Express: Take a Trip on a ‘Ghost Train’ for a Day of Halloween Fun at a Haunted Lake District Castle

All aboard for a spooktacular journey through the stunning Western Lake District countryside, followed by a day of Halloween fun and frights at what is reputedly one of the UK’s most haunted castles.

Muncaster is inviting passengers to board The Muncaster Express, if they dare…

The Muncaster Express will make two special journeys, taking passengers to Muncaster’s famous Halloween Family Festival.

On Monday 26 October, the train will depart from Manchester Victoria, calling at Preston, Lancaster, Carnforth and Ulverston. On Wednesday 28 October, the service will depart from Carlisle, stopping at Penrith, Oxenholme, Carnforth and Ulverston.

The journey is always part of the adventure when it comes to visiting Muncaster, which occupies a spectacular position in the Western Lake District, where England’s tallest mountains tumble towards the Irish Sea.

But that has never been more true than with the Muncaster Express.

Passengers will travel aboard a vintage diesel hauled train, complete with spookily decorated retro carriages, spectacular Lake District views and plenty of on board entertainment to get everyone into the Halloween spirit.

And the Muncaster Express journey is only the beginning of the frightful fun.

On arrival at Ravenglass railway station, passengers will be whisked away by coach to Muncaster Castle to enjoy the Halloween Family Festival itself.

The popular festival gets bigger and better every year, and this year is no exception, with Muncaster taking on a zombie boggle apocalypse, putting a zombified twist on one of Cumbria’s most mischievous and spooky folklore characters, the boggle.

Visitors can explore the haunted castle rooms, marvel at incredible bird of prey flying displays and have a go at archery, axe throwing and crossbow in The Weapons Hall.

There will also be live entertainment in the gardens, Halloween trails, a scary maze, pumpkin carving, Halloween parades, costume competitions, food vendors and plenty more family friendly fun.

Muncaster Express passengers will also receive an exclusive 15 per cent discount on tickets to the Castle Show, a brand new promenade performance taking place inside Muncaster Castle itself.

The production sees His Lordship, Peter Frost Pennington, facing a serious problem as Muncaster Castle is overrun with Boggles. He is forced to call in two so called Boggle Experts, Ada Twanky and Madam Bridget, to rid the castle of the mischievous creatures.

Packed with laughs, folklore and music, the performance is perfect for the whole family.

Muncaster Express passengers wishing to take advantage of the discounted Castle Show tickets can call 01229 717614 between 9am and 5pm to book.

For Muncaster’s General Manager, Ewan Frost Pennington, the Muncaster Express and Halloween Family Festival are a highlight of the Muncaster events calendar.

He said: “I am thrilled that The Muncaster Express is returning this Halloween. It is one of our most popular annual experiences and is a unique way to get into the spooky spirit. We are very excited to be opening the Muncaster Halloween fun up to an even wider audience.”

The Muncaster Express is operated by West Coast Railways, with tickets starting from £49.50 for children and £59.50 for adults.

Tickets include the return train journey, on board entertainment, coach transfers between Ravenglass Station and Muncaster, entry to the Halloween Family Festival and a free pumpkin for every child ticket, as well as access to the exclusive 15 per cent discount on tickets for the Castle Show.

Tickets must be booked in advance via the West Coast Railways website.
