STEP BACK IN TIME THIS SUMMER
History comes to life this summer at Senhouse Roman Museum in Maryport, with a packed programme of activities, guided tours and hands on experiences for visitors of all ages.

Home to one of the UK’s finest collections of Roman artefacts, the museum is offering plenty of opportunities to discover what life was like on the north western frontier of the Roman Empire, whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for an enjoyable family day out.
One of the highlights of the summer programme is the volunteer-led guided tours of the Roman fort, taking place every Sunday at 2pm until the end of October. Visitors can explore the surviving earthworks of the fort while learning about the soldiers who once guarded this important stretch of the Roman frontier.
Each tour lasts around 30 to 45 minutes and is included with museum admission. As the fort is situated on uneven farmland, suitable footwear is recommended, and tours are weather dependent. The museum has also thanked Cultura Trust and its tenant farmers for making the guided tours possible.
Inside the museum, visitors can also discover a fascinating new exhibition, The Emperor Vespasian: The Rise of a Dynasty, featuring 11 previously unseen silver coins that tell the story of Emperor Vespasian and the rise of his imperial family. The rare display offers a unique insight into one of Rome’s most significant
ruling dynasties.

There are plenty of opportunities to get hands on with history too.
Every Wednesday from 11am until 2pm, visitors can take part in Finds Handling, where museum volunteers invite guests to examine both genuine and replica Roman artefacts, offering a closer look at the objects that help tell the story of Roman Britain.
Throughout the summer holidays, Family Craft Drop-in sessions will take place every Tuesday, giving children the chance to make Roman inspired crafts to take home as a souvenir. The activities are included with admission and no booking is required.
For those wanting an even more immersive experience, visitors will have the opportunity to meet a Roman potter. Graham Taylor from Potted History will be demonstrating replica Roman pottery techniques, with visitors encouraged to get involved and have a go themselves.
Adding even more to the atmosphere, members of Ancient Britons will also be visiting the museum, bringing Britain’s pre Roman past to life. Visitors can learn about the people who lived on the edge of the Roman Empire and discover what daily life was like before and during Roman occupation.
All activities are included with normal museum admission unless otherwise stated, making it an excellent value day out for families looking to entertain children while learning something new.
Whether you’re exploring the Roman fort, handling ancient artefacts, creating crafts or discovering rare coins that have never before been displayed, there’s something for everyone at Senhouse Roman Museum this summer.
The museum is open daily from 11am until 5pm, making it the perfect destination for anyone looking to step back nearly 2,000 years and uncover the fascinating history of Roman Cumbria.
