KESWICK’S UNEXPECTED GEM
Derwent Pencil Museum turns a simple idea into a fun, family-friendly day out.

Be honest. How many times have you walked past the Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick and thought, “A museum about pencils? I’ll give that a miss.” You’re not alone…
At first glance, it doesn’t exactly sound like the most thrilling day out. We tend to associate museums with ancient artefacts, grand paintings or dramatic tales of kings and queens. Pencils, on the other hand, are just… pencils.
What the Derwent Pencil Museum does brilliantly is take something we use every day and reveal the incredible story behind it.
Before you know it, you’re learning about the discovery of graphite in Borrowdale, how Keswick became famous around the world for pencil production, and the surprising role pencils have played throughout history.

It’s one of those attractions that catches you off guard. You walk in expecting a quick look around and leave having spent far longer than planned, pointing at exhibits and saying things like, “I never knew that!” And that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

The museum is packed with fascinating stories, interactive displays and plenty of quirky facts that appeal to both children and adults. It’s educational without feeling like a history lesson and entertaining without trying too hard. Then, of course, there’s the giant pencil.

Because let’s face it, if you’re going to visit a pencil museum, you’d be disappointed if there wasn’t a ridiculously oversized pencil somewhere along the way. Thankfully, the Derwent Pencil Museum delivers.
What really stands out is how it celebrates something that most of us take completely for granted. Every artist’s sketch, every school essay, every shopping list and every brilliant idea starts with a mark on a page. For generations, pencils have quietly been part of our lives, helping shape the world in ways we rarely stop to consider.
The museum reminds us that even the simplest objects often have the most interesting stories.

It’s also a wonderful showcase of Cumbria’s heritage. The story of pencil making is deeply rooted in the Lake District, and the museum tells that story with genuine pride. It’s a reminder that world-famous history doesn’t always happen in capitals and castles, sometimes it starts in a Cumbrian valley with a lump of graphite.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is just how much fun it is. Whether you’re visiting with children, entertaining guests from out of town, or simply looking for something different to do on a rainy Lakeland afternoon, the Derwent Pencil Museum is well worth adding to your list.
So if you’ve never been because you assumed it was just a museum about pencils, maybe it’s time to think again.
Because it turns out that pencils are far more interesting than they have any right to be. And the Derwent Pencil Museum is far more than a museum about pencils.
