If you are craving fresh air, great food and a taste of true Lakeland hospitality, The Shepherds Arms in Ennerdale is the perfect place to head this winter.
Just where the Wainwright Coast to Coast route turns towards wild Ennerdale, this gorgeous traditional inn offers everything you want from a classic Cumbrian pub; homemade food, real ales and a warm welcome.
Set in the heart of Ennerdale Bridge, The Shepherds Arms is an award winning village inn with a reputation for wholesome, locally sourced dishes. From Lakeland lamb and beef to fresh lobster from St Bees and free range eggs from Frizington, their menu celebrates the best of the region. They were also the first in the area to introduce vegan dishes as a permanent menu feature, so there is something for everyone. As owner Keith Milburn puts it, “You can’t beat homemade food, and that’s what we do.”

The pub is especially well known for its Sunday roasts, which book up quickly every week. Takeaway roasts are also available for those who want the luxury of a pub dinner without leaving home. With a bright dining room, a characterful bar, a conservatory and a large beer garden beside the beck, it is the ideal place to unwind after exploring the valley.
And what a valley it is. Ennerdale remains one of the most untouched landscapes in the Lake District – peaceful, wild and surrounded by iconic fells. Whether you are blowing away the cobwebs with a lakeside walk or enjoying a full day on the fells, a pint of Cumbrian ale at The Shepherds Arms makes the perfect finish. The bar serves only local ales, alongside Cumbrian spirits, craft lager and a thoughtful wine selection.

The inn is also a favourite overnight stop for Coast to Coast walkers, with eight high standard rooms often filled with guests from around the world sharing stories of their adventures. Breakfast is taken seriously, with hearty options to prepare walkers for the trail, and packed lunches are available to both residents and non residents.

During winter, the kitchen serves food all day from noon Friday to Sunday and from the early evening Monday to Thursday. The charming dining room can also be hired for small meetings, gatherings and community events.
If you are looking for a relaxing getaway close to home, The Shepherds Arms offers comfortable rooms, excellent food and warm hospitality in one of the most peaceful corners of the Lake District.
