Rosalia – Festival of the Rose
1st May – 1st June; 9:30am – 5:30pm
Celebrate the ancient Roman festival dedicated to Mars, the god of war, and protector of Rome, with a stunning display of roses at the Roman Army Museum. Romans believed Mars was born from a rose, and during this festival, the museum will be decorated with beautiful roses in honor of this tradition.
Magna Fest: Climate vs Archaeology
24th May – 28th May; 11am – 4pm
Join us for a week of climate-themed activities at Magna Fest! From guided tours to hands-on experiences like pottery-making, visitors will explore how climate change impacts archaeology. Learn how objects buried underground are affected by changing temperatures, and contribute to a collaborative paper chain and temperature weaving station. Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the connection between climate change and our understanding of the past.
Magna Fest: Storytelling
24th May; 11am – 3pm
Experience the fascinating story of the Hair Moss Helmet Crest, the only surviving example of its kind, in an immersive storytelling session led by Justine Boussard, “Amateur Ancestor.” Discover the hidden stories behind this incredible artefact and learn more about its role in Roman history. The storytelling sessions will run throughout the day, starting at 11am, 11:30am, 12pm, 1pm, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm.
Falconry Days: A View from the Skies
28th June; 11am – 4pm
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Magna Fort, this event celebrates the symbol of the Roman Empire
— aquila, the eagle. Join Falconry Days for a stunning bird of prey display as these majestic creatures soar across the ancient landscape. It’s a unique opportunity to witness Roman military symbols come to life.
Roman Army Summer School
22nd July; 11am – 4pm
Step into the shoes of a Roman soldier during the free, family-friendly Roman Army Summer School. Learn military skills like marching, archery, and tackling the cavalry obstacle course. Will you have what it takes to join the Roman Army? After completing your training, receive a small prize and explore the museum to learn more about life on the Roman frontier.
Magna Fort Excavations 2025
The 2025 excavation season at Magna Roman Fort kicks off with an exciting new project in the northern defensive ditches of the fort. Archaeologists will be digging into areas that were once used as rubbish dumps by the Romans, which means there could be some fascinating discoveries waiting to be uncovered.
Visitors can follow the progress of the dig through regular updates in the Dig Diary on the museum’s website. Past excavations have uncovered pottery, coins, jewellery, and other incredible artefacts, and this year’s team is eager to see what they can uncover next!
