New Role for Local Therapist with a Passion for Bereavement Support

A familiar face in the local counselling community is taking on a new role this summer.

After seven years as School Counsellor at Keswick School, Mark Harkness is joining the team at Jill Glencross Independent Funeral Directors, bringing a wealth of experience in bereavement support and person-centred therapy.

Having qualified with a BA (Hons) in Person-Centred Therapy in 2012, he went on to specialise in bereavement work, gaining an additional qualification in Working with Bereaved Children.

His career has included roles at Great Ormond Street Hospital as an Operating Theatre Assistant and at Jigsaw Children’s Hospice in Carlisle.

In 2015, he was instrumental in setting up Child Bereavement UK’s services in Cumbria as part of their UK-wide expansion. “I’ve always had a strong interest in bereavement work and truly understand how vital aftercare and support are to the grieving process,” he says.

Alongside his new role, he continues to run a private therapy practice, supporting adults and couples with a wide range of issues including grief, trauma, gender identity, and sexuality.

“I feel incredibly privileged to be joining Jill Glencross and her compassionate team,” he adds. “I’m looking forward to learning new skills and sharing the experience I’ve gained.”

Outside of work, he enjoys time with his family and friends, and unwinds by cooking, running, and adding to his growing collection of vinyl records. Mark will join the team on Monday 11th August as a Trainee Funeral Director/In-house counsellor.

Jill Glencross Independent Funeral Directors is a proud and trusted supplier of Funeral Plans for both Direct Cremations as well as full-service funerals with Golden Charter.
