Cumbrian filmmakers launch fundraising raffle and gig for exciting new film
Film fans and prize seekers alike are being invited to take part in a new Cumbrian prize draw offering a range of sought-after rewards all while backing an ambitious new independent film project shooting locally this summer.
Carlisle-based director Stuart Armstrong and Kendal-based producer Alexander Kasper Jessett have launched the fundraiser to support their upcoming short film Leavers’ Day, with entrants in with a chance of winning a variety of prizes donated by local businesses.
Top prizes donated by local businesses such as Story Homes, Pioneer Foods and Rheged include a 4-night Lake District stay, a meal for 2 at 3 Michelin star L’Enclume, and a 40″ smart TV. Multiple winners will be drawn, giving entrants strong chances of walking away with something.
The draw will take place as part of a special fundraising gig at the Tithe Barn in Carlisle on Friday 1st May 2026, featuring a screening of Armstrong’s previous film and live music from local bands Exploding Head and Aphid. The event will run from 7pm to 10pm, with the prize draw taking place at 9pm. Anyone who has purchased a ticket for the prize draw at leaversday.com will be allowed entry.
Armstrong’s last short, Meat Raffle (2025), was shot in Carlisle and received national attention. The film was praised by Sir Ian McKellen and is available now to stream on Channel 4.

His new project, Leavers’ Day, is a coming-of-age story set in Cumbria in 2003. It follows a 17-year-old trans teenager and his ex-boyfriend as they search for hidden contraband rumoured to be stashed in a Lake District cave. Blending humour, nostalgia and emotional depth, the film aims to tell a universal story rooted firmly in our region.
“This is a bigger, more ambitious step for me as a director,” said Armstrong.
“We want to keep telling stories from Cumbria that can reach audiences far beyond – and this prize draw is a fun way for people to help us get it made and hopefully win some great prizes at the same time.”
Tickets cost £10 per entry, with discounts available for multiple purchases. The draw is open to UK residents aged 18 and over, and entrants do not need to attend the event to win.

Funds raised will go directly towards production costs, supporting a local cast and crew and helping the region’s burgeoning independent filmmaking scene.
For those unable to attend, entries can still be purchased online, with winners contacted after the draw.
Organisers are encouraging the public to get involved, spread the word, and support a growing wave of grassroots filmmaking in Cumbria.
