Cumbria Guide: Issue 22 – July/August 2024
A Word from the Editor
The sun is shining, the weather is sweet and in Cumbria, we’ve got it all going on! This edition offers you lovely folk a look ahead to what the summer has in store for us, and it’s looking good!
There are events galore across the county in July and August. Carlisle will be bustling this August with the return of international markets, making it a perfect opportunity to explore the many fantastic attractions that Carlisle and the surrounding areas have to offer—there’s more to Carlisle than meets the eye!
Whitehaven is set for a lineup of great events in the coming months. A brand new three-day celebration of colour and unity organised by Proud and Diverse Cumbria will see the grand opening of a new inclusive hub, a FREE community concert, and then the return of Pride by The Harbourside!
Following that, Harbourfest returns for the third year running. In previous years, this event has seen the harbourside bustling with life, entertainment, and joy, so we are really looking forward to this year.
And to top all that off, Whitehaven Alive announced they will be bringing their festival back to the harbour this year too. The line-up is yet to be announced, so follow their pages for updates. Maryport Taste of the Sea is also back this summer – get down there to enjoy some delicious food, great traders and lots to do!
Talking of festivals there’s loads coming up, with Wild on the Wall making a return this July and Solfest in August we can hardly contain our excitement.
If you know me, you know my favourite thing in the world is sunflowers, and I’m delighted that in this edition we were able to celebrate them. We spoke to Neil, better known as the crazy farmer from Crummock Bank Farm, where every year his farm becomes aglow with a golden hue emanating from millions of sunflowers. Read on to find out more.
Speaking of farmers, this is the season for the annual agricultural shows. They take place all across the county, and the only way they can continue is with your support, whether it be trading, visiting, or taking part. We are huge allies to the local farming community, and these shows are a fantastic day out and a means of supporting them. If you get a chance, pop along to one of them.
As always, the magazine is jam-packed with businesses of all kinds, all of which are run by local people. Even if you aren’t looking to spend, you can support independent businesses by simply sharing a post, liking their page, or recommending them to a friend. Simple acts like this can make a huge difference to them!
Have fun, be good, and see you in the autumn!
