IT’S CHRISTMAAASSS in our Nov/Dec issue of Cumbria Guide Magazine – read it here!

A Word from the Editor

To be honest, how many people have you heard utter the phrase, “cold old there eh”? It’s Winter, it’s cold but we’re not going to talk about the weather here. Not when there are so many great things happening in our county over the next two months!

I’m one of those irritating people who wants the Christmas decs out of the loft, detangeled and ready to go by November 1st. I love the magic of Christmas, as much today as I did when I was little. Lucky for me I now have two small children who are finally at the age where they can fully immerse and appreciate the magic. So this year I am super excited to get them all wrapped up and get them out and involved in all the festivities around Cumbria! From Christmas markets to light switch on’s and of course a visit to see the fat man himself is a must.

Every year towns around the county light up the streets and squares with colourful Christmas lights and it’s just gorgeous. The events that coincide with the big switch ons are wonderful occasions for families. This year there’s no shortage of festivities, all up the coast and across to Penrith there are Christmas events for everyone, each with something unique. We have collated some of them for you to get in your diaries!

Up until this year I’ve not been able to indulge in one of my favourite festive traditions, not since I was a child anyways… Pantos! My boys are now old enough to take to see one of these funny, classic shows. There are loads around Cumbria, take a look inside to find your nearest one. I might see you there!

We’ve included a Gift Guide in this edition which gives a brief insight into some of the awesome gift ideas our advertisers have on offer. So, when the kids are at school or grandmas, this year, instead of ordering everything online why not go back to the good ole days and get a list with all the names of those you’re buying for, get your big scarf on and head into town and see what you can get in those gorgeous little independent shops.

You’re more likely to find something unique and extra special while also supporting a local business. And when you’re ready for a break and bite to eat, pop into one of Cumbria’s many local cafes, restaurants or pubs for some lunch and a coffee. Take a friend and have a catch up while you mooch, get some fresh air, the benefits to shopping locally are so much more than supporting one local business. It’s good for the soul, they don’t call it retail therapy for nothing!

We sincerely hope you have a wonderful Christmas this year, and if you are struggling don’t do it alone, reach out, there are services available that can help. All the same, if you have a mate that’s seemed quieter recently or something just feels off, you be the one to reach out, this time of year is magical for some and truly heartbreaking for others, always be kind.

Have a fantastic Christmas and I’ll see you in 2026!

Have fun, be good…
