A Word from the Editor
As we wave goodbye to another summer and welcome the arrival of autumn, it’s time to dust off our favourite chunky jumpers, dig out those cosy woolly socks and, of course, resist the temptation to reach for the heating dial just a little while longer!
There is plenty to look forward to this season, with a fantastic line-up of events, activities and things to see and do right across Cumbria.
Of course, Halloween looms large, and there is no shortage of spooky fun for the little ones. From Muncaster Castle’s Halloween Family Festival, complete with its Scary Maze, Haunted Castle, pumpkins and Zombie-Boggle Apocalypse, to pumpkin picking at Walby Farm Park and Greystoke Castle, there are plenty of ways to embrace the season. Budding witches and wizards can also head to The Beacon Museum for its School of Magic, with magical experiments, crafts and real-life magical creature encounters.
There is plenty to discover beyond Halloween, too. In this issue, we take a fascinating look at J.B. Banks & Son in Cockermouth, which is celebrating an incredible 190 years in business. With its traditional hardware shop, original Tin Smithy and wonderful heritage museum, it really is a little piece of living history.
We also turn the spotlight on Wigton Theatre Club, which has been bringing local theatre to audiences for more than seven decades. From its beginnings in 1952 to its home at the historic John Peel Theatre, it is a wonderful story of community, creativity and generations of performers.
For those who love exploring the great outdoors, we take a look at the world of wildlife photography, while our local history pages delve into the fascinating story behind Mount Pleasant in Whitehaven, exploring the lives of those who once lived on its steep hillside and the changing landscape they would have known.
There is plenty for food lovers too. We take a look at the latest offering from The Queens at Warwick-on-Eden, where small plates, pizzas, steak deals, food nights and a brand-new Sunday Feast are bringing even more choice and value to the menu. And as the nights draw in, we have the perfect excuse to get cosy with an autumnal pumpkin spice cocktail.
As always, we have packed this issue with local stories, fascinating people, places to visit, things to do and plenty of inspiration for making the most of the months ahead. So grab a cuppa, get comfortable and enjoy another edition of The Cumbria Guide.
