Tour of Britain Women set to bring world-class cycling to Cumberland

Cumberland is gearing up for a spectacular day of professional cycling as the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women arrives in the county on Wednesday 19 August.

The opening stage of Britain’s biggest professional women’s cycle race will start and finish in Cockermouth, with riders tackling a challenging 158.9km route through communities across west and north Cumberland.

The route will take the world-class cyclists through Whitehaven, High Harrington, Workington, Flimby, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Wigton, Caldbeck and Aspatria before returning to Cockermouth for the dramatic finish.

For local residents and businesses, the event will mean some temporary changes to roads and parking. Most roads along the route will be subject to rolling road closures as the race convoy passes through. Traffic will be held for short periods before roads reopen as soon as it is safe to do so, with closures expected between approximately 10.40am and 4.30pm.

Spectators in Whitehaven can expect the race to pass through between approximately 11.43am and 11.55am, while Workington is expected to see the riders between 12.01pm and 12.17pm. The race will then continue through Maryport from around 12.16pm to 12.30pm, Allonby from 12.28pm to 12.45pm and Silloth from 12.44pm to 1.04pm.

The riders are expected to reach Wigton between 1.12pm and 1.38pm, Caldbeck between 1.30pm and 2pm and Aspatria between 2pm and 2.37pm.

Cockermouth will be the focal point of the day, hosting both the start and finish. The race is expected to cross the finish line for the first time between 2.21pm and 3.02pm, before the stage officially concludes between 3pm and 3.50pm.

Visitors heading to Cockermouth to watch the action are being encouraged to plan their journey in advance. Several town-centre car parks are available, while Cockermouth Rugby Club will provide overflow parking for spectators.

There will also be temporary road closures around Cockermouth, including Main Street and Station Street from 4am until 6.30pm and South Street from 7am until 5pm.

The Tour of Britain Women offers a fantastic opportunity for communities across Cumberland to get behind some of the world’s best female cyclists and experience the excitement of a major sporting event on their doorstep.

Residents and visitors are advised to check the latest information and plan ahead before travelling on race day.
