Behind the walls of Muncaster: A hidden history captured.

Gary McKeating and his son Tom McKeating have been granted exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the hidden corners of Muncaster Castle, capturing stunning images that reveal glimpses of the castle’s rich and layered past.
With a deep appreciation for historic, often derelict, architecture, Gary brought his keen photographic eye to the lesser-seen areas of the castle and grounds. “I love to photograph historic, usually derelict buildings, and when the opportunity arose to get some images of the unseen parts of Muncaster, I was really excited,” Gary said. “Each photo tells a story, like the wallpaper photo. The wallpaper you see in that image is the original paper used in Tom Fool’s room in the 1800s. It’s fascinating.”

Muncaster Castle has been continuously occupied by the Pennington family since 1208, making it one of England’s longest-inhabited family homes. With centuries of history embedded in every wall and corridor, the castle offers a rich backdrop for storytelling through imagery.
To share their discoveries, the McKeatings have curated an exhibition of their work. Visitors will have the rare chance to explore these otherwise unseen parts of the castle through the lens of this unique photographic journey.
The exhibition will be held in The Old Laundry Room, located in the Courtyard Café at Muncaster Castle, and opens 31st July, running til 30 Sept.

I’ve just got back from Muncaster and, not only was there no sign of this exhibition, nobody I spoke to knew anything about it! Has it been cancelled?
Hi Scotty! As the magazine is printed so far in advance, we unfortunately didn’t have all of the details at the time of printing, just knowing it would be in July! I’ve just found the web page with more information though (which can be found here: http://www.muncaster.co.uk/oldlaundrygallery) stating that the exhibition opens on 31st July. It’s on til 30 Sept, so hopefully plenty of time and we hope you can get down again to see it.
