The Romans are back at the Senhouse Museum

The Senhouse Roman Museum in Maryport reopened to the public on Friday 14th August and staff and volunteers are delighted to be able to welcome visitors back, both local and from further away.

The museum staff and volunteers passionately believe we need to shake off the perception that museums are dry and dusty places with limited interest for non-experts. Museums are for everyone! Plenty of people who don’t see themselves as ‘average’ museum visitors will be surprised by some of the unique objects they can discover at the Senhouse Museum.

There is much more to the Roman occupation than armies marching about in red tunics and the museum tells the fascinating stories of how ordinary people lived in Cumbria – and how different cultures and traditions melded together to set the scene for the way we live today.  West Cumbria has one of the most important collections of Roman altars and sculpture in Britain; you don’t need to go to London or Rome to see world-class artefacts.

A series of planned celebrations and events to mark the museum’s 30th anniversary came to an abrupt halt when lockdown began in March. Some events and exhibitions went online and some have been postponed to later this year or early 2021. The ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ temporary exhibition is on now until Christmas and a new exhibition of Percy Kelly sketches will launch on Saturday 24th October.  During the October half-term visiting families can ‘Paint like Percy’ as part of the Big Draw.

Several measures are in place for a safe visit. These include a one-way system, mandatory face coverings for all visitors and 2-metre social distancing. Entry to the Museum should be pre-booked online and visitors will be allocated a timed slot to explore the Museum at their leisure.  The museum has achieved its official ‘We’re Good to Go’ accreditation to show it is following all Government safety measures and public health guidance.
