Maryport Arts & Literature Festival returns to Senhouse Roman Museum for 2026.

Maryport’s much-loved Arts and Literature Festival returns each year, bringing inspiring stories, fresh ideas, and creative voices to the historic Senhouse Roman Museum. Known for its thoughtful themes and diverse programme of talks, readings, films, music, and discussions, the festival has become a cultural highlight.
The 2026 festival runs from Friday 27 February to Sunday 1 March, transforming the museum into a hub of conversation and discovery.
This year’s theme, “Light over Water: A Journey of Discovery,” explores exploration, reflection, and humanity’s enduring relationship with water. Highlights include a special screening of The Brendan Voyage, marking 50 years since Tim Severin’s leather curragh journey from Ireland to America, proving the legend of St Brendan’s Atlantic crossing.
The festival features writers, adventurers, and artists such as Angela Locke (Finding Myrddin), Richard Valentine, John Porter (poetry), Katie Hale (The Edge of Solitude), David Ashworth (Stepping Westward), John Mather (wild swimming), and Lakes guide Steve Watts. Conservation work with children is represented by Rosie de Mello.
With its mix of renowned names, personal journeys, and intimate setting, the festival celebrates curiosity, creativity, and connection, inviting audiences to explore new ideas in one of Cumbria’s most atmospheric venues.
