‘Museum of the Moon’ lands at Carlisle Cathedral this October

A breathtaking installation that has captivated audiences around the world is set to arrive in Cumbria this autumn as Museum of the Moon transforms Carlisle Cathedral throughout October.
Created by renowned UK artist Luke Jerram, the spectacular touring artwork is a seven-metre-diameter replica of the Moon, featuring detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Suspended beneath Carlisle Cathedral’s famous star-painted ceiling, the illuminated sculpture promises a truly unforgettable experience, allowing visitors to admire the Moon’s craters, valleys and mountains in extraordinary detail.
Running from 1 October to 1 November, the installation will be accompanied by an exciting programme of events for all ages. Visitors can enjoy concerts, talks, children’s workshops, PJ parties, late-night openings, optional ‘Moon View Tours’ high above the cathedral floor, and much more.
Luke Jerram said: “I hope visitors enjoy having the opportunity to see the Moon up close – to inspect all its craters, valleys and mountains, and to see the far side of the Moon for the first time. It’s a great pleasure to present Museum of the Moon in Carlisle Cathedral, which will frame the artwork so well.”
Alongside the installation, the Cathedral’s South Aisle will host an exhibition exploring humanity’s fascination with the night sky, while highlighting the story behind Carlisle Cathedral’s remarkable celestial ceiling and the historic relationship between faith and science.
Photography enthusiasts are also invited to take part in ‘The Moon and I’ Photography Competition. Open to all ages and abilities, the competition is searching for the best photographs of the Moon taken in Cumbria. Five shortlisted images will be displayed during the exhibition, with visitors voting for the People’s Choice Award. The winner will receive a private Angels’ View experience and a meal for two at The Cathedral Café. Entries close on 14 September.
Admission to Museum of the Moon is by invited voluntary donation, with a suggested contribution of £5 per adult or £12 per family. Daytime visits do not require pre-booking, while many of the accompanying events must be booked in advance.
Museum of the Moon will be open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm), with Sunday opening around the Cathedral’s normal pattern of worship.
