Red Dirt Skinners Come to Cumbria
December gets off to a flying start with a performance from one of the UK’s most respected country and folk duos: The Red Dirt Skinners, playing live on Sunday 4 December at 7.30pm. This multi-award winning husband and wife duo can’t be defined by one genre, drawing on influences from folk, country, blues, Americana and jazz – they can’t be pigeonholed! In 2013 the Red Dirt Skinners became the first band in history to succeed at both the British Blues and the British Country Music awards.
Comfortably blending exceptional, almost telepathic, harmonies with the unique instrumentation of soprano saxophone and acoustic guitar, audiences fall in love with the Skinners sound; Sarah’s classical training in clarinet and saxophone blended with Rob’s extensive music theory knowledge makes The Red Dirt Skinners almost unique in their sound and their songwriting.
In 2012 a burglary at their home saw the loss of all of their saved material, songs and ideas… but they channelled the despair into their next album, 2012’s Home Sweet Home which received universal praise fro the critics and laid the foundations for their success which has grown ever since. Two further albums have followed, Sinking the Mary Rose (2013) and this year’s Behind the Wheel (2016).
The Red Dirt Skinners have recently returned for their second hugely successful tour of Canada and this Cumbrian leg of the tour will be their final performance of the year before returning to North America in 2017. Their roots, country and blues should find a welcome audience in West Cumbria, where the live music scene continues to surprise.
