Dorothy Ramsay Retrospective Exhibition: Florence Arts Centre, Egremont
West Cumbrian venue hosts major retrospective of Lake District artist Dorothy Ramsay Florence Arts Centre is delighted to present a very special collection of work from this well-loved artist.
Dorothy Ramsay’s career spans over 60 years and encompasses weaving, textiles, painting, drawing and printmaking. She was instrumental in saving the historic Wetheriggs Pottery in the 1970s, running it for nearly twenty years with her ex-husband, Jonathan Snell who made traditional slip-trailed ceramics while she ran a busy weaving workshop, employing six other weavers.
The exhibition shows the full breadth of her work, the first time it has been brought together as a retrospective in one venue. Highlights include her earliest prints, powerful textile work inspired by volcanoes, paintings documenting her travels to North Africa and Europe, landscapes inspired by the Cumbrian coasts and fells and her more recent figurative and abstract work.
It is also a rare opportunity to view artwork loaned from private collections as well as Dorothy’s own archive, much of which is on public display for the first time. A variety of pieces are available to purchase including larger paintings, smaller works and original cards.
At 77, Dorothy is still painting, drawing and printmaking and her work is as vibrant and intuitive as ever.
Curator Vega Brennan explains, “Dorothy’s work has a unique rigour and vitality that sets it apart. It is so important that we share this collection with the wider world and recognise how much she has
given to Cumbria and the art community.”
On Sunday 25th September visitors can meet the artist and the curatorial team in conversation at the official opening event (12-3pm, no booking required).
On Sunday 16th October Dorothy will be hosting an exclusive printmaking workshop (book online – details at florenceartscentre.com).

Curated by Vega Brennan and Laura MR Harrison and produced by Anne Waggot Knott, the exhibition runs at Florence Arts Centre near Egremont from Friday 16th September – Sunday 30th October inclusive.
