Discovering the dreamy art of Monica Metsers!

DISCOVERING THE DREAMY ART OF MONICA METSERS

Her work blends observation and memory – reimagining real places into dreamlike scenes.

Social media can be a glorious tool, especially for discovering local talent, be it artists, photographers, musicians, and so forth. It’s where we discover 95% of the creatives we then go on to feature, to be fair.

A few months ago, this lass’ work popped up, and once again I was gobsmacked by the pieces displayed on the screen before me. This time, it was Monica Metsers’ work that caught my eye; as you can see below, it is absolutely impressive.

I’d best describe her work as dreamy, skillful, playful, dramatic, and calming, all at the same time! Whether Monica is capturing seascapes or landscapes of Cumbria or the islands of Scotland, you instantly recognise the places but see them as if viewing them for the very first time.

Monica said, “I aim to capture the sense of awe and wonder I feel for the natural world in my work. Being in the places I paint has been a form of escapism for me since I was a child growing up near the Howgills, from the Cumbrian Fells which I know like the back of my hand, to the remote Scottish Islands where I love to run away to now and then, I try to create works that sit somewhere between straightforward depiction and the way they make me feel, that sense of dreamy otherworldliness”.

After 19 years of sharing our famous and much-loved landscapes, sometimes you think, “Okay, I’ve seen this tree a million times,” and it can become tiresome. However, Monica presents us with familiar views in ways that are unique, fun, mesmerising, and captivating.

It’s her imagination on canvas that makes these works pop, allowing you to fall into them and react emotionally; that is where great work shines through. If something you see, hear, or touch evokes an emotion, you know you have done your job well.

In addition to painting, Monica also creates lino prints, which are completely different from her paintings, although she uses Cumbrian landscapes as subject matter. Again, she pushes boundaries and brings imagination and colour to her work.

This Kendal lass loves including the moon and stars in her lino prints, though they are not the focal point; they serve almost as a signature, a stamp that conveys those hazy vibes of creativity.
