Cumbria Cricket’s Over 50’s are not out just yet!

The ECB (English Cricket Board) 50+ County Championship has been a staple of amateur cricket since 1984. But just months before the 2025 season, the ECB unexpectedly withdrew its £15,000 annual funding —leaving many counties concerned about the competition’s future.
Following urgent talks, the ECB agreed to part-fund the knockout stages this year. However, from 2026, all support will end, and counties will be left to run the competition themselves.
“It’s sad that we’ve lost this funding. Many of the lads have been playing since they were kids.”
Cumbria Over-50s captain Paul McEwan shared: “It’s sad that we’ve lost this funding. Many of the lads have been playing since they were kids. It’s not just about cricket—it gets us outdoors, keeps us fit, and really supports our mental health. Losing it would be devastating for many. We still plan to continue into 2026 with the help and support of some fantastic sponsorships, but we are still seeking additional sponsorship and appreciate any donations.”
Cumbria has been part of the competition since the beginning and returns this year in a tough group alongside Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and others. Matches take place on Wednesday afternoons from May to July.

With players drawn from across the county, travel and time commitments are significant. The team is mostly self-funded, so a new committee has been set up to lead fundraising, sponsorship, and promotion. A Facebook page is also in the works to help raise the team’s profile.
