Bears At The Beacon
Bears At The Beacon – Whitehaven’s Beacon Museum opened its doors with the wonderful new exhibition Bears!.
The exhibition is delighting children and adults alike – while the museum’s new touchscreen displays bring the history of Whitehaven and its harbour to life.
It’s been a busy time for the team who have introduced capacity restrictions, a strict cleaning regime and a one-way system throughout the fully accessible museum which ensures visitor safety. Further small, but frequent, changes are coming with their ongoing digitisation project which started with four touch screen interactives in the viewing gallery.
Each installation concentrates on a key element of the harbour and its surroundings. The panoramic view from the gallery provides the perfect backdrop for one installation which picks out key buildings in the area – some have survived while others have not – and provides anecdotal information on each. Another focuses on the geology of the area like rock formations, fossils and its importance for mining.
Trade is the key topic of another display, while the fourth focuses on the harbour development and its changes over time, describing the development of piers, quays and how they came to be named. The interactive aspect also gives you the ability to sail your ship into the harbour.
The Bears! exhibition will run until early 2021. This collaboration with Seven Stories National Centre for Children’s Books features original storyboards and sketches from some of the world’s best-known children’s books.
This fun-filled exhibition provides a roaring surprise around every corner! From cute bears to scary bears, from childhoods gone by, and bears with adventure on every page. The bears are brought to life through interactive, vivid sets. It’s a mesmeric experience of colour, sound and, most importantly, stories.
Visitors will meet literature’s most famous bears including Rupert and Winnie-the-Pooh, before discovering new stories filled with polar bears, pandas and toy bears. Don’t miss this opportunity to see beautiful, inspiring illustrations and artwork from the creators of many favourite bear books which will help children gain an insight into the process of illustration with many artists using a combination of traditional and digital techniques.
Another exhibition, Eating In, is also set to open. Explore what we eat, where it comes from and the influence of fashion, media and culture on our eating habits. From Mrs Beaton to Jamie Oliver, delve into our ever changing dining history and how this has been altered by time, fashion and technology. Discovering the diets and food producers that make our plates what they are today.
With themes of food from far away, feast and famine, cooking technology and gadgets, Eating In is a fascinating insight into something we take for granted.
The Beacon Museum’s school provision is up and running and the team is looking forward to working with schools again.
