Jill Glencross set up her own Independent Funeral Directors on October 8, 2018, in Dalston, Carlisle, after working at the Cumberland Infirmary for 24 years. Jill left Pathology in 2017 and went to work for Walker’s Funeral Directors on Wigton Road, Carlisle. This had been her family funeral directors until it was taken over by DIGNITY, a national company. Setting up on her own meant she could do what she wanted and her hands weren’t tied.

Jill’s dedication, hard work, and total passion for the business has seen it grow and thrive to be the busiest funeral directors in Carlisle. She has also gone on to be recognised for her total dedication and hard work which has won many awards, including; In-Cumbria New Business of the Year 2020, Peter won Golden Charter Employee of the Year 2021, Jill was named Cumbria Women of the Year 2022, and number one in the Three Best Rated Funeral Directors in Carlisle 2022 and 2023.

Jill said, “We offer our families a completely unique and personal experience that they will not receive anywhere else. Making the most difficult time in their lives more bearable with them having to do nothing but sit back and let us take care of everything for them. We are also here after the funeral, and that is when it is important. We don’t just send you an invoice and then forget about you. If you have been a family who we have cared for, you will know what we do and what I mean.

We get great comfort knowing that people are pleased with our service, but the most important thing is we provide families and loved ones with a genuine, dignified, caring and faultless service”.

During the last five years, Jill has married her soulmate and business partner Russell, and Jill sadly lost her dad, Mike, very suddenly in 2021. She also received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 2022. Jill’s sheer strength and determination have seen her through both the good and the bad, helped along by her amazing team and her family. She now employs 19 staff, which is a long way from originally just being Jill on her own with her team of four casual staff.

She has also expanded her premises and installed a whole new mortuary. Jill purchased her fleet of Mercedes Hearse and Limousines, something she never truly believed when she started the business.

For Jill, it really is much more than a business; it’s personal and her care goes far beyond the funeral day.

Jill says “We also hold a social evening which has been going since 2019. Everyone is welcome. We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at The Auctioneer at Rosehill, Carlisle 7-9pm. This is not bereavement support, it’s just a lovely get-together for people who want to get out. We have a fabulous meal and a really pleasant evening – “quite a bit of laughter is involved too”.

Jill may be based in Dalston but has cared for families from Carlisle, Keswick, Dumfries, Annan, Appleby, Penrith and even conducted a service in Entwistle, Lancashire,  as the family wanted Jill.  Jill was unsure at first, but she made it happen, something that family will never forget.

Her friendly, personal, and professional service is avaiable 24 hours a day when you need her and her team the most. If you are looking for funeral directors that deliver a personal, bespoke, above-and-beyond service, then contact Jill Glencross.
