Tullie Celebrates Award-Winning Success, Record Visitor Numbers and Vital Community Impact

Tullie in Carlisle is celebrating a season of achievement. From national recognition for excellence to record-breaking visitor numbers and far-reaching community engagement, the independent charitable trust has a lot to shout about.

Following a glowing VisitEngland assessment in July, Tullie secured an outstanding 90% quality score, up 6% on last year, retaining its “Quality Assured Visitor Attraction” status. The report praised the museum’s newly refurbished welcome area, ground floor gallery, high-standard retail space and exceptional customer service, with staff and volunteers achieving an impressive 97% rating.

The museum’s latest blockbuster exhibition, Dinosaur rEvolution, has proved a roaring success, attracting over 13,500 visitors since opening at the end of June, including more than 1,000 in its first weekend alone.

Tullie’s mission goes beyond its buildings. As an independent charity, the museum is committed to making culture accessible to everyone in Carlisle and beyond. Every pound spent on admission tickets, retail purchases, café orders or memberships is reinvested directly into exhibitions, learning programmes and community engagement activities. Between April and June 2025 alone:

  • 31,465 visitors came to Tullie
  • 2,155 school pupils engaged in learning activities
  • 3,368 families, young people and community members took part in engagement sessions
  • 857 people joined Tullie-led outreach events across the city
  • 3,447 volunteer hours were given to support the museum
  • 21 free family activity sessions were delivered at the museum
  • Hosted wellbeing groups for people living with dementia, older adults and those experiencing loneliness ran at full capacity, with 100% of participants reporting improved wellbeing

Andrew Mackay, Director said:

“These achievements are a testament to our team, volunteers, supporters and community partners. Since opening our new spaces in April, we’ve had incredibly positive feedback and are looking forward to continuing to build on this with our future redevelopment plans. From welcoming thousands of visitors to inspiring young learners and supporting wellbeing, we are proud to be a museum for everyone. ”

With further phases of its major redevelopment, Project Tullie, on the horizon, the museum is looking forward to an even brighter future, combining world-class galleries with a deep-rooted commitment to community impact.
