Reinventing the wheel with EV tyres!

Electric car drivers are missing out on hundreds of additional miles per year by not having the right tyres!

Well, they say every day is a school day. I didn’t know that EV tyres were a thing. New research points towards great savings for EV owners by fitting the right tyre for the right vehicle.

Owners could gain around 700 miles of additional mileage and pocket £119 in savings per year by simply having EV-compatible tyres.

According to Michelin’s new EV calculator, EV tyres can extend the range of a car by seven per cent, or the equivalent of 18 miles per charge on a vehicle with a 250-mile range.

“Getting an additional 700 miles and making £120 in savings per year simply by having EV-suitable tyres is an easy win for drivers.”

EV tyres allow drivers to embrace the full performance of their cars, reduce noise levels, and extend the battery range. This means that an average driver in the UK could expect to gain an additional 700 miles per year — the equivalent of a 13-hour drive from London to John O’Groats.

John Howe, Managing Director for UK & Ireland, said: “EV-suitable tyres not only enhance battery range, allowing drivers to travel further per charge, but these tyres last longer on an electric car than a standard tyre.

Michelin has also revealed the top 10 vehicles set to gain the most miles and save the most per charge. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 would travel an extra 26 miles and make a saving of £4.55 per charge.

The Tesla Model 3 (24 extra miles per charge, £4.12 saving per charge) came in second, while the Volkswagen ID.5 and Mercedes EQA would both gain an extra 23 miles per charge and save £4.03 and £3.93, respectively.

To help EV owners calculate the number of miles they can gain per charge by having EV-suitable tyres, Michelin has launched the e-PRIMACY Calculator. The tool reveals the additional mileage per charge if drivers were to switch to Michelin’s e-PRIMACY tyre range versus a standard tyre. It also gives the financial savings that can be made per charge due to the additional mileage covered.

The additional range is the result of technology in EV-suitable tyres, such as lower rolling resistance and features in a tyre’s side walls to absorb less energy, which allows for an extended battery range.

“A great deal of innovation and research goes into producing a tyre that can increase the range of an electric car. It requires the incorporation of several new tyre technologies to lower rolling resistance, increase efficiency, and optimise the handling characteristics of electric cars.

“Beyond the numbers, it reflects a step towards making electric mobility not only more environmentally attractive but also more economically appealing, and this gives EV users more freedom and flexibility in their daily travels” concludes Howe.

I’ve checked the calculator and I am happy to say they aren’t ripping your eyes out, price-wise. Also, there are many outlets across the county to help you get on the road.

Happy Motoring!
