Carlisle’s iconic Market Hall is entering an exciting new chapter under the stewardship of the Bearmont Group, ensuring its future is in safe and capable hands.

Renovations are already underway, breathing new life into this historic Victorian market.

Known as one of the last surviving Victorian markets in the UK, the Market Hall was built in 1799 on the site of ancient Roman baths, is a landmark rich in history. Rob Lloyd, CEO of Bearmont Group, is committed to preserving the building’s heritage while giving it a much-needed update. After years of underinvestment, this revitalization marks the start of an exciting new era for the space.

Market Hall Manager, Helen Wylie, has long been dedicated to the site, navigating its many challenges with resilience. She has witnessed the highs and lows of the Market Hall over the years and is now thrilled to see the vision for its future unfolding.

The transformation promises to be a major asset to Carlisle, providing numerous opportunities for emerging food entrepreneurs and enhancing the city’s retail landscape.

Revitalizing a Historic Landmark
Rob Lloyd, the hands-on CEO of Bearmont Group, is personally investing hundreds of thousands of pounds into restoring the Market Hall to its former glory. Rob, who has a proven track record of revitalizing large-scale projects, shared his vision for the space:

“Our aim is to turn the Market Hall into a dynamic destination that seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary retail. We want to breathe new life into this historic building, making it a vibrant hub once again.”

The new Market Hall will feature a diverse mix of retailers, including national names like B&M, who will occupy the former Wilko space. Additionally, the Hall will showcase an array of artisanal vendors, such as butchers, fishmongers, and bakers, who will work alongside other food outlets to create a lively, energetic atmosphere.

“After years of underinvestment, this revitalization marks the start of an exciting new era for the space.”

This exciting fusion will make the Market Hall a must-visit destination, drawing people from across the region.”

Rob encourages traders to join in this exciting new phase: “This is a unique opportunity for local entrepreneurs to be part of something special—The Market Hall will soon be the place to shop, meet, eat, and enjoy everything we have to offer.”

A Legacy Reimagined
One of the standout features of the renovation will be the revitalization of the Food Court, which will now include a dedicated performance space to celebrate the Market Hall’s rich musical history.

Alongside the new layout and design, the space will offer an entirely fresh look and feel, while honoring the building’s storied past—dating back to 1799.

The upcoming “Love Your Local Market” campaign will take place from Friday, May 16th to Saturday, May 31st. The Market Hall will participate in this national event, offering an exciting opportunity for visitors to see firsthand the transformation in progress and support local traders.
