Keekle Mission Celebrates 150 Years with Special Exhibition and Community Event
Keekle, Cumbria – October 2025 – Keekle Mission, now known as Keekle Village Hall, is set to mark a remarkable milestone this autumn with a special exhibition and celebration weekend on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October 2025, commemorating 150 years since its first divine service in 1875.
Founded in 1875 as a branch of St John’s Church, Hensingham, Keekle Mission has been at the heart of the community for generations—hosting worship, gatherings, and countless community events. For many residents, the Mission has been more than just a building; it has been a place of belonging, fellowship, and shared history.
In recent years, with the support of local people, generous donations, and Lottery funding, the Mission was saved from closure and given a new lease of life as Keekle Village Hall in 2015. Thanks to the tireless work of a dedicated committee and volunteers, the building has since been renovated and reinvented to provide thriving facilities for bingo nights, slimming clubs, exercise classes, and private hire.
The upcoming exhibition will showcase the hall’s rich history, from its origins as a mission church through to its reinvention as a vibrant community hub. It will also celebrate the dedication of the people of Keekle and Padstow, who rallied together to ensure the building remained a vital part of village life.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of our shared history and community spirit,” said John Jewel, chair of the committee. “Keekle Mission has been here for 150 years, and thanks to the determination of local people, it continues to serve as a place where the community can come together and thrive.”
