Hensingham ARLFC celebrates 125 years of Rugby League legacy

Hensingham Amateur Rugby League Football Club (ARLFC) is celebrating a major milestone in 2025, its 125th anniversary. As one of the oldest rugby clubs in the country, the West Cumbrian club is marking the occasion with a full calendar of events and a celebration of its proud history, both on and off the field.

Founded in the late 19th century and switching to Rugby League in 1920, Hensingham has come a long way from its early days playing just 200 yards from its current Cleator Moor Road ground. Thanks to the dedication of long-serving volunteers and committee members like George Benson, Ian and David Kirkup, and Ernie Rae, the club has evolved into one of the UK’s premier amateur rugby league facilities.

The 125th anniversary celebrations begin with a live performance by comedian Mick Miller on 5th July, followed by a darts night with Dave “Chizzy” Chisnall on 9th August. The centrepiece of the festivities, Henfest, takes place on 23rd August, featuring an Oasis tribute act and local performers. A craft fair on 18th October will round off the year’s public events, with local crafters invited to take part.

Rugby remains the heartbeat of the club, with teams ranging from First and Second Teams to Under 18s, Under 14s, and juniors. September will see a renewed push for new players, with the club encouraging both newcomers and experienced players to join.

“Hensingham ARLFC has long been a launchpad for top-level talent. Many players have gone on to play professionally, including current
first team coach Kris Coward”

Local signings such as Matt Dalton, Vince Gribbin and Scott McAvoy have made their mark, while several have gone on to play at the highest level of the game, including Super League names like Simon Knox, Stephen Holgate, Craig Murdock, Kyle Amor and Lee Mossop. A full list of past players who turned professional will be featured during the club’s historical exhibition later this year.

The club also continues to serve the wider community as a social hub. The clubhouse is open Thursdays and Fridays from 6pm and all day at weekends, available for private functions (excluding 18th birthday parties).

From grassroots beginnings to a proud legacy spanning 125 years, Hensingham ARLFC remains a cornerstone of the community and a vital part of Cumbrian sport.
