GIVE A DAY CARLISLE: A week of putting kindness first!
GIVE A DAY CARLISLE
A week of putting kindness first.
by Danni Murphy
A week dedicated to generosity is set to return to Carlisle this summer, as Give a Day to the City takes place from 29 June to 5 July 2026.
The initiative invites people across Carlisle and the wider Border region to give their time, skills and passion to benefit others. Whether it is an hour, a full day or even the whole week, the message is simple: everyone has something they can offer. From donating blood and giving food, to helping a neighbour, renovating a garden or hosting a community event, every act of kindness plays a part.
“It might be as simple as noticing something in your neighbourhood that needs care and taking the first step to change it.”
At its heart, Give a Day to the City is about asking one powerful question: what is in your hands? Organisers encourage individuals, schools, workplaces and community groups to take what they already have, whether that is a practical skill, creative idea or willingness to help, and use it to make a difference.

The idea first began with Andy Fearon of Carlisle Vineyard Church, who shared a vision with local leaders of a city where everyone gives something back. That vision quickly gained momentum, and by 2015 it had been presented to the Carlisle Ambassadors, inspiring businesses and organisations across the city. The first pilot project soon followed, when local businessman Paul Rheinbach led the renovation of a football club’s changing rooms.
Since then, the initiative has grown year on year, supporting a wide range of projects. Early efforts included building accessible pathways, encouraging future business leaders and supporting NHS staff. In 2016, following the impact of Storm Desmond, many projects focused on recovery, from clearing sports pitches to refurbishing community spaces and helping flood affected homes.
There are no limits when it comes to getting involved. Many ideas begin with a simple thought of “what if we just…”. That could mean tidying an overgrown green space, bringing generations together through crafts, hosting a thank you party for key workers, fixing something that has been broken for too long, baking for a local fire station or organising a free coffee morning on your street. It might be as simple as noticing something in your neighbourhood that needs care and taking the first step to change it.

Organisers encourage people to think about what has been bothering them in their local area, or what small act could brighten someone’s week. Whether working alone or as part of a group, every contribution helps build a stronger sense of community.
While the scale and scope of projects has evolved, the aim has remained the same: to make Carlisle a more generous and connected city. Give a Day to the City is about more than volunteering. It is about bringing hope through action and showing that positive change is possible when people come together.
As the 2026 event approaches, residents are once again being encouraged to get involved, share ideas and take part in a week that celebrates kindness, community spirit and the power of giving.
