The Galeón Andalucía Set to Sail into Whitehaven Harbour

by Danielle Murphy

From July 10th to July 13th, Whitehaven Harbour will host a once-in-a-lifetime event, welcoming the Galeón Andalucía, the only remaining sailing galleon in the world.

This stunning 16th-17th century replica will be docked in Whitehaven, offering the public a rare opportunity to step aboard and explore the majestic vessel that has traveled the world’s seas.

Whitehaven hasn’t seen a ship of this scale and historical significance for two decades, making this a truly exciting and unique event. Gerard Richardson of Whitehaven Town Council, shares, “It’s been 20 years since we last had a ship of this size in town, so it’s going to be a really exciting event and we think it’s a fantastic opportunity for the public to come down and witness a ship like this in the harbour once again.”

“Whitehaven hasn’t seen a ship of this scale and historical significance for two decades, making this a truly exciting and unique event.”

The Galeón Andalucía is a meticulous replica of the great Spanish galleons that once sailed the oceans between the 16th and 18th centuries. These powerful ships were used by the Spanish Crown for monumental maritime expeditions to establish trade routes between Spain, the Americas, and the Philippines. As part of the “Fleet of the Indies,” galleons carried merchant traders, settlers, and sailors, while hauling valuable goods from the New World and Asia.

For centuries, these ships dominated the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific, leaving an indelible mark on global trade and exploration. Now, the Galeón Andalucía carries on that legacy, offering an unforgettable journey back in time.

The ship is an extraordinary feat of craftsmanship. It took three years of research in Spain’s historical and maritime archives to build this 500-ton replica, ensuring its accuracy in design, structure, and scale. Measuring an impressive 160 feet in length and 32 feet in beam, the ship is a true representation of its 16th-century counterparts.

With four towering masts and six massive sails, the Galeón Andalucía spreads almost 11,000 square feet of sail and has an average cruising speed of 7 knots. Since her launch, a dedicated crew of 15 to 35 people have sailed her across the world’s oceans, including the Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, and the Caribbean, evoking the long journeys of her historical ancestors.

This is your chance to step aboard a piece of living history! The Galeón Andalucía will be open to the public throughout her stay at Whitehaven Harbour, where visitors can explore the ship’s decks, learn about its fascinating history, and imagine life on the high seas during the golden age of exploration.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, maritime fan, or simply curious, this event offers a rare opportunity to get up close to one of the most impressive ships in the world. Don’t miss your chance to explore the Galeón Andalucía and witness the grandeur of a bygone era.

Mark your calendars and set sail for Whitehaven Harbour from July 10th to 13th.

This is an event that promises to captivate, inspire, and transport you back in time — don’t miss out!
