This summer, The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven welcomes Forty Farms, a powerful exhibition by British Life Photographer of the Year, and Cumbrian farmer, Amy Bateman.

Running from 5th July to 7th September 2025, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the lives of 40 farming families across Cumbria and the Lake District.

What began as a year-long photography project soon evolved into a heartfelt exploration of rural life. Through stunning images, immersive film, and personal stories, Forty Farms highlights the diversity, resilience, and challenges facing today’s farming communities.

“What began as a year-long photography project soon evolved into a heartfelt exploration of rural life.”

The exhibition features voices from across the industry, including author James Rebanks, chef Simon Rogan, and damson grower Harley Trotter—shedding light on both tradition and the future of food and farming.

Councillor Anne Quilter called it “an exhibition that not only showcases exceptional photography, but also gives voice to the real experiences of farmers across
our county.”

Whether you’re interested in photography, food, or farming, Forty Farms is a moving tribute to the people who help shape the countryside we love.
