FAREWELL TO A PENRITH ICON: N. Arnison & Sons Ltd

The retirement of Nigel and Tim Arnison marks the end of an era for one of Cumbria’s oldest businesses.

At the heart of Penrith stands one of the county’s oldest businesses — and without doubt, one of the most striking and beautiful buildings in all of Cumbria.

We are, of course, talking about N Arnison & Sons Ltd, or simply Arnisons, as it’s affectionately known.

Housed in a beautifully preserved Grade II listed building, Arnisons is more than just a shop — it’s a beloved institution, iconic and synonymous with Penrith itself. How the building has managed to avoid the fate of modern refurbishments over the decades is a blessing — and thank heavens for that.

“Not only is the building an architectural gem, inside and out, but discovering it for the first time was a genuine joy.”

The shop has stood proudly since 1742, originally opened by the grandparents of none other than William Wordsworth, the world-renowned poet. Today, it is owned and run by brothers Nigel and Tim, who’s family took over the shop in 1831, they describe it as a family-run clothing retailer. But ask any local, and they’ll tell you: Arnisons sells everything. And it always has.

Step inside and you’ll find a treasure trove — from menswear, shoes, shirts, and suits to ladies’ fashion, lingerie, accessories, and even an underground “bunker” filled with linens, sheets, and more. The shop has weathered recessions, depressions, plagues, world wars — and yet, here it still stands. For the time being…

After decades of dedication, Nigel and Tim have decided to step back, enjoy life a little more, and begin their well-earned retirement. As they look to new chapters, Arnisons as we know it will soon come to an end, as Nigel and Tim look to retire come the end of November.

What will become of the shop and its legacy is still uncertain. Tim said “We are retiring, and myself and Nigel would like to thank each and everyone of you who have supported us and shopped with us for the last 283 years and a massive thank you to our members of staff who we have worked alongside over the decades”

It’s a deeply sad moment for Penrith. The closure of this iconic, much-loved business will leave a void — not just in the high street, but in the hearts of all who’ve passed through its doors. But, as George Harrison once said, “All things must pass.”

With every ending comes a new beginning. Still, the news of the closure was a real shock when it first broke earlier this year. Not only is the building an architectural gem, inside and out, but discovering it for the first time was a genuine joy. Having worked closely with independent traders for over 20 years, I can honestly say Arnisons was a rare find — a true gem, steeped in character, history, and charm. And the lads? Great craic, always.

Right now, there’s a sale underway. So if you’d like to say your farewells, wish the incredible team the very best, and maybe pick up a bargain while you’re at it — now’s the time.

Soon, those doors will close forever. Don’t miss the chance to be one of the millions who have stepped inside this majestic, independent, family-run treasure.
