Cumbrian band wins Kendal Calling best new act award
A Cumbrian band has won the inaugural Calling Out award for best emerging performer at this year’s Kendal Calling Festival.
Exploding Head – who performed on the Calling Out stage to a busy and enthusiastic crowd on Sunday 3rd August – received the accolade following deliberation from a mix of music industry professionals, including SoundWave and festival organiser Ben Robinson.
The four-piece indie rock band, which comprises Emily Ford (vocals/guitar), Stephen Benson (guitar), Robin Howson (bass), and Paul McGuirk (drums), were presented with the Calling Out award during the recording of a post-performance podcast.
Since receiving the award, Exploding Head have enjoyed their first national radio play via the BBC Introducing platform. In addition to this, the band have recorded a music video for their debut single ‘Aimee Bought a Fascinator’ with Carlisle-based director and screenwriter Stuart Armstrong at the helm.
Exploding Head will also be performing a free-entry show at Muncaster Castle on Wednesday August 20th, in connection with SoundWave and Krankenhaus Festival, which takes place over the bank holiday weekend. The festival will play host to a slew of indie heavyweights including Sea Power, Arab Strap and Throwing Muses.
Following this, the band are set to perform alongside the Glasgow-based band Dragged Up at Carlisle’s The Source on October 25th.
The debut EP from Exploding Head, titled A Polar Bear Stare, is now available to stream on all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, BandCamp and YouTube.
