September 16th will see Whitehaven’s harborside bursting with colour and life as Proud and Diverse Cumbria bring their first ever live music celebration to West Cumbria.
The inaugural event will see huge stars take to the stage and celebrate the beauty and diversity of our communities. Headliners include Sandi Thom, who became well known for her song ‘Wish I Was a Punk Rocker, and international superstar boy band East 17, who had hits such as It’s Alright’ and ‘Stay Another Day’.
As well as the headliners, there will also be performances from Angie Brown, Tina Cousins, and many more.
Not only is this one of the biggest events coming to Whitehaven in 2023, but admission is totally free, and everybody is welcome.
Co-founder of Proud and Diverse Cumbria, Glenn Anderson, said: “We could see that more needed to be done in the West of Cumbria to celebrate and support those who need it. Our aim is to also change minds, dispel the negative stigmas around LGBT+ communities, and simply celebrate life in all its colours!”
The event has attracted many fantastic sponsors, and recently it was announced that Proud and Diverse Cumbria will be getting sponsorship from one of the biggest development agencies in the UK, Arts Council England. They have provided funding for the biggest youth tent ever held in Cumbria. The youth tent will hold interactive activities with plenty to do. There will be workshops held by Tullie House, and there will also be fashion designers in there where youngsters will have the opportunity to create masks, some of which will be worn at London Fashion Week!
There will also be an open mic set up for anybody to come along and take to the stage. Anybody and everybody is welcome to take part in these events.
Glen said, “To secure sponsorship from the Arts Council in our first year is unheard of. To be entrusted to deliver by such a commendable organisation is just incredible.”
As well as the youth tent, there will also be lots of charity stalls, such as those for the Deaf Association, Autism Awareness, and many more. The one thing that Proud and Diverse Cumbria is aiming to do is become an organisation that supports all kinds of diversity in our communities and shows that they are not an exclusively LGBTQ+ organisation but are in fact here to support anybody and everybody that might feel they differ.
