Investment in Cumbria: A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Scheme Approved to Boost Jobs and Connectivity
The UK Government has officially approved the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine scheme, a landmark project expected to significantly enhance transport connectivity and create thousands of new jobs across Cumbria and the North.
With this upgrade, journey times will be reduced by up to 12 minutes, fostering economic growth and facilitating better access to key regions, including the Lake District.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the government’s commitment to revitalizing infrastructure, stating, “Transport is the backbone of our economy. With over £92 billion investment, we are delivering schemes that fast-track economic growth and strengthen communities.”
The A66 upgrades will establish a continuous dual carriageway between the M6 at Penrith and A1(M) at Scotch Corner, improving freight routes and boosting tourism by connecting visitors to the picturesque Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.
In addition to the A66 project, plans are underway for a new station in Haxby, North Yorkshire, enhancing rail access for 20,000 residents. The government is also supporting local road improvements across Yorkshire and the Humber to ease congestion and promote regional development.
This ambitious investment will contribute to creating approximately 42,000 jobs and providing infrastructure essential for sustaining growth and improving the lives of local residents.
