Cllr Deborah Earl, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Community Services (including Libraries and Archive) said:

“This event will provide a great opportunity to celebrate the service and showcase everything that they offer. There will be something for everyone including arts, crafts, talks, tours and much more!

“With a new chapter for local government almost upon us in Cumbria, this event also reminds us of the achievements of this brilliant service under the management of Cumbria County Council.”

Mrs Claire Hensman, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Cumbria, said:

“The communities of Cumbria are invited to join us at this celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of Cumbria Archive Service with a range of family activities, talks, tours and exhibitions.

“As part of this special occasion I’m also honoured to be planting a tree for the Queen’s Green Canopy project, commemorating our late Queen’s seven decades of service and marking her Platinum Jubilee. The project serves as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty’s extraordinary service to her country and her people, which I’m delighted to commend on this key milestone for our Archive Service.”

Cllr Andy Connell, Chairman of Cumbria County Council, said:

“In 1962 the Counties of Cumberland and Westmorland and the City of Carlisle came together to create the Joint Archives Committee. Since then, Cumbria’s Archive Service has gone from strength to strength, providing free resources, expertise and kindly guidance that open many doors to discovery, whether for professional historians engaged in academic research or individual citizens exploring their family roots. I speak from personal experience as a satisfied customer: we can be justly proud of the service we provide.”
