Historic replica of Columbus’s flagship prepares for Cumbrian visit and you can step aboard.

A remarkable piece of maritime history is set to arrive on the Cumbrian coast this summer, as the Nao Santa María prepares to dock in Whitehaven at the end of July.
Built in 2018 to mark the 525th anniversary of one of history’s most significant voyages, this full-scale replica brings the Age of Exploration back to life. Constructed in just 14 months in Punta Umbría, Spain, the vessel combines traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering, using iroko wood over a fiberglass structure to balance authenticity with safety.
The ship is an impressive sight, with four masts carrying over 300 square metres of sail and supported by more than three kilometres of rigging. While equipped with modern navigation systems, it is designed to sail much like its 15th-century predecessor.
The original Santa María, captained by Christopher Columbus, was the flagship of the 1492 expedition to the Americas. Although lost later that year, its legacy endures as one of history’s most iconic ships.
Since launching, the replica has toured Europe and the United States, attracting visitors eager to experience life at sea during the Age of Discovery. Guests can explore the decks and learn about the harsh conditions sailors once faced.
Tickets will be available online, offering a rare chance to step aboard this floating museum. Anticipation is already building following last year’s popular visit from El Galeón Andalucía, with another memorable event expected for Whitehaven’s harbour.
