Give a day to the city – A whole week of generosity, kindness and giving back

Give a day to the city!

A whole week of generosity, kindness and giving back to the community.

by Danni Murphy

Give a Day to the City is a project which has been running in Carlisle since 2015.

First initiated by Andy Fearon of Carlisle Vineyard Church, the concept is to encourage local people, businesses and organisations to take their passion and skills and dedicate themselves to completing a project that benefits either the community as a whole or even just an individual.

In 2015, Andy stepped up at a Carlisle Ambassadors meeting and simply asked:

“What if everyone in our city took whatever they were good at, whatever they were passionate about, whatever skill they had, whatever was in their hand and gave it to our city for a day?”

The result was outstanding, over the course of four months over 12 projects were initiated, beginning with a renovation of a local football club’s changing rooms. Since then the idea has spread far and wide and each year multiple projects are undertaken within the community, from the building of accessible roads, home renovations, memorial garden refreshes to small but significant acts of kindness like litter picks.

After the devastation of storm Desmond in 2016 GAD was dedicated to encouraging the community to come together to help with some of the aftermath, from clearing debris from sporting areas to helping with restoring some of the homes affected.

The next Give a Day to the City will take place over the course of a week, from July 1st – 7th.

No matter what your skill set, the idea is that anything is possible when we come together.
