Developing a Community Vision for Mid Copeland
Developing a Community Vision for Mid Copeland
Our Community Partnership has been asking people what’s important about their local area, to develop a Community Vision as part of the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) programme.
Developing this Community Vision for Mid Copeland involves thinking about what could be important for future generations if a GDF was hosted in this area.
The government will provide Significant Additional Investment in a community that hosts a GDF.
This investment will be shaped by a local Community Vision and could include, for example: local education and skills, transport infrastructure or recreational facilities.

You told us what’s important:
- “develop a large complex including sports, training, medical, GDF visitors’ centre and hotel”
- “improved road infrastructure”
- “more hands-on skills needed”
- “need to keep village feel”
- “upgrade A595
- “uphold heritage & culture of the village”
- “we need bus services”
- “better access to higher education”
Your top 3 topics:
- Need for better transport links and infrastructure
- Easier to reach health and wellbeing services
- More local education and employment – including skills and trades
Finding a site for a GDF – an underground facility designed to safely and securely dispose of the most hazardous radioactive waste – is a long-term programme for Nuclear Waste Services. A Community Vision will therefore continue to evolve over time.
