Cheese Maker to Visit The Grate Border City
A new food festival is hitting the streets of Carlisle. The Carlisle Foodies Fest will be serving up dishes of fun and tasty treats in the city centre on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October as well as some rather famous cheese.
The event will be headlined by culinary demonstrations from celebrity chefs Sean Wilson and Michael Caines MBE.
The Saturday will see demonstrations from Sean Wilson who owns the Saddleworth Cheese Co. Sean said: “The Carlisle Foodie Fest is really important to me; we sadly lost the awesome Whitehaven Festival in the area so it’s nice to come back to the Lake District.
“Hopefully people have seen, heard about and enjoyed our produce and I hope they enjoy the demonstrations in Carlisle.
“There will be fire, prominence and fun”.
“I’ll be doing five demonstrations in one day which is the most I’ve done in one day, I’ve done four before so I’m sure it will be fine doing five. There’s definitely going to be fire, there will be prominence, fun and audience participation and we will be taking centre stage. That’s what these events are all about having fun and that’s why Carlisle has put this on, to celebrate the end of summer and the start of autumn.”
Sean Wilson is a regular visitor to our region. He has appeared numerous times at food festivals in Cumbria. Sean explained: “You’re not drawn to the Lake District are you. You just set off in your car and as soon as you start going ‘Oh WOW this is gorgeous here!’, then you know you’re in the Lake District. It’s absolutely gorgeous round here.”
On the Sunday, Carlisle will play host to Michael Caines MBE. This acclaimed chef has two Michelin Stars, five Rosettes from the AA and the number one restaurant rating in the UK. He also regularly appears on Masterchef as a judge.”
Sean said: “It’ll be great to be working with Michael Caines; he’s one of if not the best chef in the country and the best part is he’s one of us, he’s so down to earth.”

Since its foundation in 2009 the company has notched up an array of awards. Including awards for World Cheese, Global Cheese and International Cheese. The company now supplies a range of deli’s and supermarkets. Sean aims to expand the company even further. Sean explains: “We’re in talks with lots of people at the moment, that’s the sign of a good business; we’re trying to take the business nationwide now.
“We’re going from being a small artisan maker to growing bigger, we’re trying to bring the same ethos we’ve always had but to a wider audience so fingers crossed.”
As well as expanding his business Sean is involved in a lot of personal ventures including book and TV deals in the pipeline. Sean said: “My agent and I are in talks with publishers about producing a book on the history of British cheese. It will look all the way back as far as Julius Caesar and right through to the present day. I think it’s a story that needs telling and I think I’m the right person to tell it.”
The Carlisle Foodies Fest has been organised by Carlisle City Council. It is supported by Cumbria County Council and the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership. Demonstrations start at 11am. Free tickets to see the celebrity chefs in action are now available via Skiddle.
