Born in a Hurricane, Forged in a Fire – A Cumbrian Acoustic Duo from Egremont has created The Official Theme Song for the Dead Rabbit bar in New York City which was voted ‘The Worlds Best Bar’ in 2015 and 2016.

Two lads from England, the tenth hottest July in New York’s history, and the quest to find The Dead Rabbit Bar, otherwise known as ‘The World’s Best Bar’. After finding it, sampling it, and loving it, the pair known as NewtonSmith decided to write a song about it. The bar’s owners loved it, sent it to a talented producer in San Francisco to finish it off, and ‘Born in a Hurricane, Forged in a Fire’ was born.
The Story
From the Lake District in England to the Financial District of New York, two musicians known as NewtonSmith hopped across the Atlantic for a gig in Tompkins Square Park. With no guitar thanks to bad logistics planning, they set off to find a music shop. After a long afternoon of searching, they decided to head for the infamous Dead Rabbit bar on Water Street. Despite their tight schedule, they made allowances to enjoy food and drinks, soaking in the atmosphere (and the cocktails) throughout the afternoon. It truly was special, two best mates so far from home drinking whiskey cocktails in The Best Bar in the World. They loved it.
The experience stuck in their heads for months and finally, during the UK’s COVID-19 lockdown, they put pen to paper. Inspired by one of the bar’s coasters bearing its famous motto ‘Born in a Hurricane, Forged in a Fire’, the duo crafted an upbeat, catchy, and charming track describing their experience and the place itself. After sending it to the owners of the bar to see what they thought, the pair were surprised to hear that the owners wanted the track to become the bar’s official theme song, its anthem if you will. Enlisting the help of a producer in San Francisco known for his extensive touring as lead-guitarist for Mickey Hart of Grateful Dead, the track truly came to life.

Bio
NewtonSmith are an energetic, Folk-Rock/Americana duo from the UK. Established in 2013, the band consists of singer and guitarist Alec Smith and singer Lewis Newton. Inspired by the modern Folk-Rock and Americana scene in the US, the duo are still finding their style taking creative cues from the likes of The Lumineers and early Mumford & Sons.
After nearly 8 years together, 2020 has seen the release of NewtonSmith’s long overdue debut single ‘Blue Sky Smile’. The track aims to raise awareness of the stresses and strains people so often hide behind an innocent smile, encouraging everyone to think twice before passing judgment. With single number two on the way and several original tracks in the works, the duo are aiming to release their debut EP in early 2021.
NewtonSmith have found local success in their home county of Cumbria in the North West of England but have recently gained traction in the US after a gig in New York City last July (2019). They’ve played across the UK from Edinburgh to London and are planning a return to the US to promote the release of their debut EP as soon as possible.
